From Tanzania, With Love: Exploring Our New Gemstone Collection

From Tanzania, With Love: Exploring Our New Gemstone Collection

I’m excited to tell you about a new, one-of-a-kind gemstone collection in the JBJ studio. These gems are especially close to my heart because they’re sourced primarily from Tanzania, a country I visited and love.

In addition, this mine employs women and empowers them to work safely, improve their financial security, and create stable, equitable markets for fair trade.

Here's a look at what you can expect, and why I’m excited to launch this collection.

Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro

Sixteen years ago, I visited Tanzania, and while I was there, I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro.

It was a life-changing trip.

Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, located in northeastern Tanzania. It's famous for being one of the tallest free-standing mountains in the world, rising about 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level.

Kilimanjaro is unique because it has distinct climate zones. When you start at the base you’re in a lush rainforest. Then you climb into an alpine desert area and finish in a cold, icy zone at the top. I’ll never forget those breathtaking views.

The mountain is not only a popular climbing destination, it’s also a symbol of majestic natural beauty. An incredible snow-capped peak towering above the African plains.

With this new gem collection, I want to bring a similar spirit of wonder and beauty to California, and to you.

So Many Special Qualities

The gemstones in our new collection are carefully chosen to show off their natural beauty. You’ll find stones like tanzanite (blue), tsavorite (green), sapphire (multiple hues), garnet (pinks and reds) and more. Gems come in so many colors, and this diversity allows you to choose stones that match your personality, mood, or outfit.

More exciting qualities about the collection:

  • Each colored gemstone is unique, with its own set of characteristics like hue, saturation, and tone. Wearing a colored gemstone can feel like wearing a one-of-a-kind piece of art.
  • Many colored gemstones are associated with specific meanings, powers, or benefits. For example, sapphires are often associated with wisdom and royalty, while emeralds are said to symbolize rebirth and love. Wearing colored gems can thus be a way to express personal values or aspirations.
  • Colored gemstones add a pop of color and can elevate an outfit, making it more vibrant and eye-catching. They can also be matched or contrasted with clothing colors to create a specific look or style.
  • Many colored gemstones have rich histories and are tied to cultural traditions, making them conversation pieces as well as beautiful adornments.
  • People often feel a personal connection to certain colors or types of gemstones, whether because of their birth month (as in birthstones), a memorable occasion, or simply a color that resonates with them. This emotional connection can make wearing colored gemstones a more meaningful and enjoyable experience.
  • When you purchase one of these gems, you’re helping women artisanal gem miners in Tanzania and Kenya. A portion of the funds are re-invested to help run market days and support local community needs. You become part of a story that transcends borders and uplifts lives.

Some of the gemstones in the collection will be set in fine jewelry pieces like necklaces, rings, earrings and bracelets. Other gems will be available for customized designs.

I’m so excited for you to see this collection and I hope you will find something that you love. Stop by the studio or browse online and let's embrace the beauty of our world. Your support makes a difference, and together, we can contribute to a legacy of empowerment, beauty, and shared humanity.
